Introduction:

Apple is considering offering notebooks with foldable displays, according to Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) analyst Ross Young. The corporation thinks to be in talks with its suppliers about devices with displays of roughly 20 inches. Young speculated that this display size may support 4K or greater resolutions.
Young’s reports are worth taking seriously because he has revealed a wide range of accurate insights into Apple’s plans, including the iPhone 13 Pro’s ProMotion display, the display size and bezels of the sixth-generation iPad mini, the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro’s mini-LED displays with ProMotion, and more.

He claims that the foldable laptop might be the start of a whole new product category for Apple, but there’s still a lot of mystery around the enigmatic new design. He claims that Apple might create a whole new product category with the folding notebook, but with so little known about the enigmatic new form factor at this early stage, there appear to be three primary alternatives for how the company might envision the gadget.

MacBook Had a Foldable Display

MacBook Pro with Retina Display

An all-screen MacBook with a display that spans the full interior of the clamshell form is perhaps the most obvious solution for a folding Apple computer. Young seemed to hypothesise that this implementation could result in a dual-use device. Noting that it might be able to function as a notebook with a full-size on-screen keyboard.  When folded and as a monitor when unfolded and utilised with an external keyboard when unfolded.

  • Disadvantages to this design

There are various disadvantages to this design, including Apple’s well-known aversion to delivering a touchscreen-based Mac.  For example, not be a really practical or appropriate implementation of Multi-Touch,” according to former Apple design leader Sir Jony Ive.
Instead of touch, macOS  extensively gear for indirect trackpad or mouse input. Apple technical head Craig Federighi claimed in 2020 that the aesthetic of macOS was developed and evolved in a way that felt comfortable and natural across a variety of devices. And that touch did not even consider. This isn’t even taking into account the possibility for ergonomic concerns with a touchscreen keyboard.

This isn’t even taking into account the possibility for ergonomic problems with a touchscreen keyboard and trackpad. As a result, an all-touchscreen MacBook appears to be wildly out of line with Apple’s current thinking.

With a physical keyboard and a foldable display

A MacBook with a hinge-folding display that extends vertically. It meets the device’s physical keyboard might be a more out of the box form factor. This system could provide the advantages of a larger display with area for peripheral on-screen material while keeping the advantages of a traditional keyboard and trackpad.

The design may also provide a means to bring the Touch Bar back to life without sacrificing real function keys. In a separate interview, Federighi highlighted how the MacBook Pro’s Touch Bar avoids the ergonomic issues that other touchscreen computers have:
We believe that the ergonomics of operating a Mac are such that your hands are resting on a surface.  And that moving your arm up to poke a screen is somewhat tiring.

Whether or not the Touch Bar revive, extending the MacBook’s display in this fashion. It would comply with Apple’s ergonomic requirements of not lifting one’s arms to touch the screen while also providing a new touch input place.

In this case, a 20-inch display would be more likely.  Apple allows to sell a larger MacBook Pro to sit above the 16-inch model in the range. It  similar to the 17-inch MacBook Pro that was available from 2006 to 2011.

CES 2022 tech show

While Apple is taking its time to enter the foldable laptop market. Asus debuted its foldable laptop at the CES 2022 tech show this year. The Asus Zenbook 17 Fold OLED, which can be folded into a compact form.  And carried in a small bag, was unveiled by the company. It can be used as a tablet, a standard laptop, or a book according to the makers. While foldable have been criticized for their lack of durability. Asus claims that its laptop can be unfurled ten times each day on average and the hinge will still function well for years.

Samsung also unveiled its 17-inch folding Samsung Flex Note panel at the same tech conference.  But unlike Asus’ Zenbook 17 Fold OLED, this was a concept model for laptops and was not ready to ship. The bottom half of the screen will serve as a keyboard, a media controller for editing videos, and a pen input pad for drawing according to Samsung. The rest of this technology’s specifics are yet to be revealed. However, the foldable market is still in its infancy. And users will have to wait a few more years to get their hands on this technology.
