Before you buy a used iPad, there are a few things you should know
iPad Condition:

This may seem like an obvious one, but check for any scratches or damage on the surface of your iPad that may have occurred from being dropped. Check around the edges for any dents and dings. If you are worried that someone may have broken your iPad, contact Apple to get a replacement, or return it for a full refund.

That alone isn’t a huge deal if the device still works, but you’ll also want to look for any cracks in the screen that may appear. If you do, they are often hard to see unless you look very closely. Low-light conditions tend to hide scratches from our eyes, but as soon as we get outside in daylight, scratches really stand out. So make sure you are looking for them, and look very closely!

iPad Price:

When buying a used iPad, prices are typically not the same from seller to seller. Instead, some sellers will be asking for less than what other sellers would be asking for. This is because the person is in desperate need of money and is hoping to sell the product.

Because of this, it’s always a good idea to search around for deals on different used marketplaces. Here’s an example of how you can find great discounts on the iPhone, and then use the funds saved to upgrade to a better model!

As it turns out, most used iPad devices end up selling for less than their purchase prices. This is why you need to do your research before making an offer for the device. If you think that the selling price for a used device is a bit lower, you could ask the seller to send a photo of the damaged area so that you can make your offer based on the condition of the unit.

Sellers can and do sometimes hide important details from buyers. Make a point of asking as many questions as you can. This will ensure that the buyer has all the information needed to make the right purchase.

Things should I check before buying an used iPad

iCloud Account Activation:

When purchasing a used iPad, perhaps one of the most important steps to take is to actually find out if it’s a stolen unit or not. Thankfully, it’s really easy to find out!  With iOS 7, Apple added a feature called “Activation Lock,” which stops iPads from being stolen.

Find My iPad is a tool that lets people who find a lost or stolen iPad or iPod touch locate it for safe recovery. When Find My iPad is enabled, it essentially locks the iPad to the original Apple ID and password of the user. Even if the iPad is wiped clean, the device still requires the original Apple ID and password to get back into its normal settings.

Apple is working on a new Activation Lock feature for the iPad. This will allow users to see if their current iPad was stolen or not. If it was, then it’s safe to say that it was stolen.

You can access Apple’s new Activation Lock lookup tool by heading to icloud.com/activation lock, and you don’t have to sign into your iCloud account to access it. Enter your iPad’s serial number to get to the page where you can check if the device has been stolen. If it hasn’t, it will let you know that it is still locked.

Carrier Lock:

An iPad may be SIM locked to a specific carrier. The SIM is the small chip that holds your phone number and other information. When an iPad is SIM locked, it can’t be used on a different carrier’s network.

It is possible to check if an iPad is locked to a particular carrier, but it involves looking at the phone’s Settings or inserting a SIM card from a different carrier into the phone.

Before you buy an old iPad, make sure it’s not carrier locked. If it is carrier locked, you will be locked out of all your data plans. If this is not something you need to worry about, you should consider buying a new one from a trusted source.
