Download Apps for Older iPhones and iPads

Certified used apps

You can install older app versions on hardware that does not support iOS 16 if you have previously purchased or downloaded the app.

You only need to turn on your old device and launch the App Store. Click the profile icon in the upper-right corner of the screen from there. On a gray background, your profile photo or initials should be displayed.

Thereafter, you can tap the Purchased link. You’ll discover a list of all the apps you’ve already downloaded and installed on your iPhones and iPads under My Purchases.

Be patient, as older devices may struggle to handle the current load. It may take up to two minutes for the App Store to retrieve a list of downloaded applications.

Once the list is displayed, you can scroll or search for the desired application. Apps that have been totally removed from the app store, either by the developer or through Apple’s purge of outdated apps, will not be available.

Consequently, even if you’ve owned an iPhone or iPad since its inception, you may have lost access to some apps.

Downloading outdated iPhone and iPad app versions

Every previously purchased app that is not currently installed on your device will have an iCloud symbol next to it.

This iCloud icon will install the app on your smartphone if you tap it. However, do not tap away from this screen just yet. If the most recent version of the app is incompatible with your iOS version, you will have to wait around one minute.

If this is the case, the Program Store will display a notification stating that the latest version of the app cannot be downloaded. However, you will be able to download an alternative version of the application.

Apple allows you to download older app versions, although in a concealed manner.

Tap the Download button to install the app on your iPhone or iPad.

This will be a technically “outdated” version of the app in question, but it will still be compatible with the older device. When you install an older version of an app, you will not have the most recent and finest experience.

You will not be able to choose which version of the application you want. You are restricted to the most recent app version compatible with your installed operating system.

Download Apps for Older iPhones and iPads

A method for obtaining apps you do not have.

One disadvantage of this strategy is that you will only be able to download apps that you have previously “bought.” However, there is a workaround that will allow you to acquire applications that you have never installed.

The workaround requires an iOS or iPadOS device that is newer. In addition, it can be difficult to determine whether the app in question still supports your older technology. You’ll have to figure that out through trial and error, but it’s worth a shot.

You can examine the Version History to determine if an app has a compatible update for your older device.

Simply purchase the application on your newer device. It will then appear in the “Purchased” section of the App Store on all of your other devices.

Using the approach mentioned above, you can download a compatible version on your older iPhones and iPads once it is in the Purchased status.

This suggestion does not apply to iOS 16 devices that are just becoming obsolete. However, it is useful for iPhones 6 and older.
